Lord of the Rings.

Thats about it.

I know there were 1 or 2 movies based on Agatha Christie books that may have actually been better than the book (but this is based of childhood memories), and perhaps Disclosure by Michael Creighton.

Boy, this has got to be a really short list, doesn't it?

I liked the Lord of the Rings books better, though Peter Jackson and crew did a really good job with the movies. There were some parts the movies did better, like the coda of an ending Tolkein wrote that they avoided ("the scouring of the Shire"). That business with Saruman and Wormtongue didn't make much sense in the book, and the movie handled it much better. On the other hand, I thought PJ messed up the Ents, and mourned the loss of Tom Bombadil.

Oh, I thought the lost of Bombadil was one of the best things Jackson did.

I took a class in college on the comparison of films to the books they were based off of. None of the movies we did in that class were as good as the books (and we did a few classics like 2001 and Clockwork Orange). I remember doing a project for the class in a comparison of Tom Clancy's books to the movies based off them (which at the time was just Patriot Games and Hunt for Red October)

Some of the James Bond movies were far better than the books in my opinion.

Never read Fletch, but the movie is a classic.

The movie is faithful to the first Fletch novel, which was the first in a series of adventure-mystery novels. The books accent the adventure over the dry wit.

At first, the director and writer were looking at Burt Reynolds in the title role for the movie! While I'm sure Burt would've been passable, it was a stroke of genius to let Chevy Chase handle it, and they gave him free rein with the props and ad libs. The result: a classic.

I should be clear, the Bourne Identity is the only film that has any similarity to the book beyond the name of the character. The other two (supremacy and ultimatum are too different to bother considering them based on the books)

I'm torn on THE THIRTY STEPS. The book by John Buchan was wonderful , but the movie was Hitchcock, and it is tough to top Hitchcock
