A lot of arbitrary decisions, and reopens the possibility of dealmaking (I'll vote for Santo this year if you vote for Grich next year kind of stuff (though that probably isn't the best example as I believe both santo and Grich HOF worthy))

The vet's committee has been responsible for correcting some glaring oversights of very deserving players, as well as selecting some of the most marginal players imaginable.

It's like a country music radio station -- you take the good with the bad.

1947-72 is the "Golden Era?" Why? What good could possibly come out of naming it such?

The Hall's release.

Totally with Neyer on this one. Why would you name a "Historical Overview Committee" that doesn't even have a historian on it? Another bad decision by a body that has a history of them.

Probably not worth the bother, but I wonder ...

If we made teams of the best VC selecteess versus the worst BBWAA selectees, covering all positions, who would win?

Right off the bat, the VC has Jimmie Foxx at 1B. Other than that, it would take some research.

Oh, the VC's best would beat the BBWAA's worst, but it would be close.

No, he wasn't. My mistake on that. He was elected by the BBWAA right away. For some reason, I was thinking Chuck Klein and put Jimmie Foxx instead.

Don't listen to me. I do not know what I'm talking about, usually.

The VC team would be, roughly, the 19th century all-stars. It would look something like this: C Buck Ewing, 1B Dan Brouthers or Roger Connor, 2B Bid McPhee, SS George Davis, 3B Jimmy Collins, OF Sam Crawford, Billy Hamilton, and Sam Thompson, DH Cap Anson. We could spice it with some 20th century guys like Arky Vaughan, Enos Slaughter, Pee Wee Reese, Johnny Mize, Nellie Fox, Richie Ashburn, and Home Run Baker. Pitchers could include Kid Nichols, Tim Keefe, Joe McGinnity, Eddie Plank, and Old Hoss Radbourn.

A quick look at the worst team you could form from BBWAA selections: C Roger Bresnahan, 1B Tony Perez, 2B Ryne Sandberg, SS Rabbit Maranville, 3B Pie Traynor, OF Andre Dawson, Ralph Kiner, and Jim Rice, P Catfish Hunter, Herb Pennock, RP Rollie Fingers.

Noticed this: the BBWAA hasn't really elected a debatable second baseman. All of those choices are solid.

Good work, Shawn. It would be close, since the old timers don't really translate to modern players very well. The VC team would have some defensive greats from over a century ago, plus you gotta love Kid Nichols. Third base and first base would be a big edge for the VC team and the outfield would be some guys who could run and chase down the line drives that the BBWAA sluggers would be hitting all over the place.

There isn't anyone on your VC team that isn't a true HoFer. Connor, Hamilton, Crawford, Nichols, Anson ... this is a fine team.

It may be worth noting that the VC hasn't elected a reliever yet. Some day they will.

The VC will elect Trevor Hoffman (assuming the Writers don't) and Lee Smith. Not Franco.

Didn't the VC elect Hoyt Wilhelm? nevermind, I guess he did get in by the writers.

I thought that was what you did now, Pat.
