Meanwhile, the Pirates threw the second pick in the draft to a high school pitcher. That gives them a roughly one in fourteen chance of having a successful big league pitcher in a few years.
Why do teams do this? The second-best college pitcher has a MUCH better chance of winning in the big leagues than the best high school hurler of the last five years.
Sure - this kid could be the next Clemens or Josh Beckett. Absolutely he could. But the odds are waay against him considering the money they must pony up to even sign him at that level.
