Indians send Austin Kearns to the Yankees for a horse with no name.

About time too. Kearns had an OPS+ above 100 and that was making the other regulars feel bad.

The Cubs send P Ted Lilly and IF Ryan Theriot to the Dodgers for IF Blake DeWitt and minor league pitchers Brett Wallach and Kyle Smit.

Also, the Yanks have traded for Lance Berkman.

Now official. Berkman to the Yankees for two minor leaguers, P Mark Melancon and IF Jimmy Paredes.

Actually, the Kearns trade serves two purposes:

1) we got rid of our third-best hitter, and
2) we made a roster spot for Kerry Wood, who had been injured twice already this season.

The great part about activating Wood is that we can demote Chris Perez, who has been lights-out as a closer and hasn't allowed a run in ten July outings. So we can get our "regular" closer some work in the off chance that we get a late-inning lead and not worry about actually, you know, saving the game and stuff.

And now Kerry Wood has been traded to the Yanks for a ptbnl. Maybe we'll get Kearns back and just call it a day.

Wood will set up Rivera and be an upgrade from Joba, I guess. Just trading him is an upgrade for the Tribe.

Pirates send RP Octavio Dotel to the Dodgers for P James McDonald and OF Andrew Lambo.

Great deal for the Pirates, who get two decent prospects for a reliever.

Royals send OF Rick Ankiel and P Kyle Farnsworth to Atlanta for OF Gregor Blanco, P Jesse Chavez, and P Tim Collins.

Not a lot going on here, but I like KC's side of this better. Ankiel has little to offer but the occasional HR, Farnsworth can't be counted on in any sort of crisis. The guy is, frankly, nuts. What KC gets is not that spectacular either: Blanco is a good defensive OF who doesn't hit enough to be a regular and Chavez is a disposable reliever. Collins is a lefty who could be a good reliever in the near future. The Braves had just gotten him from Toronto.

The Tribe also sent Jake Westbrook to the Cards in a three-way deal that netted the Tribe a minor league pitcher who is nothing special. Jake is coming back from injury and should be okay in the Cards' rotation.

The upshot for the Tribe is that they open a roster spot for slugging minor league OF Jordan Brown, who will presumably replace Austin Kearns in LF.

At this point, the Tribe is getting rid of decent older players who have some flaws or are injury-prone and clearing up room for youngsters who have some talent to show off. Ass't GM Chris Antonetti said, "We would like to be on the other end of these kinds of deals someday soon, and that's what working working towards right now." Amen to that.
